Cigarette Box Books;
One of the main problems I'd had with book making was having text
that felt substantial enough for me to make a little book out of it,
and then the technical matter of actually getting the text onto the
pages in a linear format. Thus the revelation and redemption came
in the form of label makers from wal-mart. I ended up making
around 8 of these little books and then found a tiny book shelf and put 'em there. The writing is mostly others, Rimbaud, Patchen,
Cohen. I noticed with any unique object of sorts it hits a direct nerve
in people that runs a vein to their pocket; the randomness and uselessness of the product produces an effect in people that sticks
'em and makes a hunch whisper 'I want, I want it, just buy it'. And
then people end up with plenty of things they don't want. Then they
sell 'em at yardsales. I wanted to counter act that impulse somehow
so I gave all the books unpleasant themes & content, each one was
designed for 'the wretched' or 'unfullfiled'. Instead I was trying to
come from some place of tenderness, to say- hey if you're feeling
wretched you already got enough to deal with- but here is something to relate. I brought them out and waited for the unhappy people
to come find their comfort. Mostly, they didn't, I stil have about 2 left
if they're for you.....
